CHRONOLOGY

In originally, the Intan Jaya case blew up on Sept. 15 – 20 this year. There were at least 4 people who died in this violence included 2 national armies, a civilian, and pastor Yeremia himself. The murder case of Pastor Yeremia in Intan Jaya Papua became a controversial case that paved the way for an in-depth investigation of the violence at the Intan Jaya district, as the mastermind behind this violence still couldn't be identified until this article posted.

There were two assumptions regarding the suspect in the murder case of Pastor Yeremia. Some parties such as Church Association, Papuan Human Rights Activist, and so on, believed that the Indonesian National Army was the mastermind of this case meanwhile the other parties including the National Army itself claimed that the Armed Separatist Group shot Pastor Yeremia.

As this case was not clear and no strong evidence provided by both sides, furthermore, society pushed the government to unravel this case. Therefore, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD formed the joint fact-finding team sanctioned by the government to investigate the Intan Jaya shooting case. The joint fact-finding team involves community leaders, religion, customs, lecturers & academics, the Police, Indonesian National Army (TNI), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), as well as the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK).

The investigation process in the Intan Jaya district, Papua since Oct.7 didn't run smoothly. There was an incident that caused one of the joint fact-finding team members and one Indonesian National Army (TNI) from Apter Hitadifa's task force been shot by the armed separatist group. But the investigation kept going on. The last update from the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, reported that the murder case of pastor Yeremia is not a standalone incident but previous cases leading to it. Meanwhile, the investigation result of this case would be announced shortly.

PUBLIC OPINIONS

  • The Armed Separatist Group
The armed separatist group in Papua is a group that wants to separate Papua from Indonesia. As reported on the news, in the previous years, the armed separatist group committed a massacre of civilians, then accused the National Army and Police of being the perpetrators. The action was carried out to get attention at the UN General Assembly. Therefore, this group usually would get into action when the UN General Assembly is coming up. The National Army and some other parties claimed that the murder case of pastor Jeremiah was the Armed separatist group mode that aims to seek attention towards the UN General Assembly scheduled on September 22-29. This pattern was the same as the violent cases by the armed separatist group in previous years ago. Reported that the armed separatist group deliberately killed 2 Indonesian national armies then killed the civilian to set a picture that Indonesian National Army killed the civilian for revenge, and by that it could get attention at the UN General Assembly that Indonesian state apparatus did a human rights violation.
  • Indonesian National Army
Indonesian National Army was often accused of being the suspect of human rights violations against indigenous Papuans. These similar cases happen ever since a long time ago. In the murder case of pastor Yeremia, the National Army was accused as a mastermind of this case, as the National Army and Police provided financial assistance to the family and some parties assumed that they were responsible for this murder. Papua Regional Police Public Relations Head, Kombes AM Kamal explained that there is no post or office of the security forces in the location of the incident. It was just planning to established the Koramil Office in the scene.
Till today, this case has not been clear whether the Indonesian Apparatus or the Armed Separatist Group is right. The public is waiting for the joint fact-finding team report regarding the result of their investigation.
